Point to point links for detached buildings

Any building that is not attached to the house gets its connection over the air, from a detached garage thirty feet across the driveway to a workshop on the far side of five acres. A pair of small directional antennas, one aimed at the other, carrying a real connection with nobody digging a trench. This is the wireless answer, and wireless is what we do.

This is the job that most often starts as somebody asking whether an extender would reach the barn. It would not. This does.

It applies to more properties than people expect. Any structure with its own exterior walls is a separate building as far as a radio is concerned, whether that is a detached garage at the end of a short driveway or a pole barn across several acres. The answer is the same shape either way, and it goes over the air.

What is included

  • A line of sight check across the property, since that is what decides whether this works at all
  • A link designed for the distance, whether that is thirty feet or half a mile
  • A directional link sized to the distance, not the biggest antenna somebody could sell you
  • Mounting, aiming, and weather sealing at both ends
  • An access point inside the far building, because the link gets the signal there and something has to serve it
  • The far building on your network properly, not on a separate island with its own password

What moves the price

  • Distance between the buildings and whether anything is in the way
  • Whether both ends have power, and how far the equipment sits from it
  • Mounting, since a soffit is straightforward and a pole or roof mount is not
  • Whether the far building is metal, which changes where the inside antenna has to go

Ranges come from the assessment, once somebody has looked at the building. We do not publish a headline number because it would be wrong for most houses.

Questions people actually ask

How far can this actually go?

Across a residential property, comfortably. A few hundred feet with clear line of sight is routine and the link is usually faster than the internet connection feeding it. What kills it is not distance, it is obstruction: a stand of oaks between the two buildings matters far more than the number of feet.

Why not just bury a cable?

Because we are a wireless company and a link is the better answer nearly every time on a property like this. It goes up the same day, it costs less than a trench, it can be moved if a building changes use, and it does not involve a machine cutting across your yard or a permit conversation with a neighborhood association. A buried cable is occasionally the right call, and when it is we will say so plainly and you can hire that work out. We do not dig.

Will a mesh unit in the window do the same thing?

Almost never, and this is the single most common thing people try first. A mesh unit radiates in every direction and is designed for inside a house. A directional link concentrates everything into a narrow beam aimed at its partner. Same power budget, completely different result.

My workshop is metal. Does that ruin it?

No, it just changes the design. Metal siding and roofing reflect signal rather than pass it, so the receiving antenna mounts outside the building and a short run brings it in to an access point on the inside. Trying to shoot through the wall is what fails.
