IoT and guest network segmentation
Your thermostat, doorbell, robot vacuum, and television do not need to sit on the same network as the laptop holding your tax returns. Segmentation puts them on separate networks with rules between them, so a compromised smart plug cannot reach anything that matters.

Is this actually necessary in a house?
It matters more the more devices you own. The typical large home we see has thirty to sixty connected devices, many of them cheap, several of them no longer receiving security updates from the manufacturer. Segmentation means the worst of them cannot become a path to your computers.
